Planning Grants were established to increase the number of GME first-year residency positions in Texas by increasing the number of entities engaged in the training of residents. These grants encourage new partnerships between applicants and existing GME programs for the purpose of developing new residency programs. The program provides support for hospitals, medical schools, and community-based, ambulatory patient care centers in Texas interested in creating a new residency program with first-year residency positions.

This report concerns graduates who have completed coursework at a Texas medical school and continue their education and training in a Texas residency program. This 2024 report is the seventh report to present the current state of the Texas physician workforce, educational pipeline, and THECB administered GME initiatives. 

The Family Practice Residency Advisory Committee (FPRAC) consists of 12 members and is charged with making funding recommendations to the Board for the Family Practice Residency Program (FPRP) and related support programs. The Committee and FPRP were established in 1977 by the Texas Legislature. The intent of the program is to increase the numbers of physicians selecting family practice as their medical specialty and to encourage those physicians to establish their practices in rural and underserved communities in Texas. Membership includes representatives from the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association, Association of Directors of Family Practice Programs, Texas Medical Association, Texas Hospital Association, Texas Academy of Family Physicians.

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s (THECB) Academic and Health Affairs Division is pleased to announce a Request for Applications (RFA) to support partnerships between hospitals and nationally accredited graduate medical education (GME) programs. The RFA, which is part of the Emergency and Trauma Care Education Partnership Program (ETEP), seeks to provide increased training opportunities for physicians in emergency and trauma care.
